it depends on the ages
toddler- young kids would probably love to be something that they know about. so if they know what a baseball is, then make a paper mache baseball for her to wear.
pre-k-3rd grade- these girls love being what they want to be when they grow up. if your child wants to be a pop star, make her dress fabulus and give her a mikrophone. if she wants to be a doctor then give her a doctors out fit.
older girls- usually like being scary or something weird. when i was thirteen, i put a hanger on my head and a large teeshirt and called myself a closet. at twelve i put on a homemade masquerade mask and a long white shirt and was a masquerade ball queen. im fourteen and this year im probably going to go out as a she-were-wolf. i hope this helped, even if u didnt liked my ideas, u could make sum new ones with my help.

i raised 2 daughters and on a tight budget, we almost always made their costumes.
they have been, Avon ladies, clowns, bums, princesses, cartoon characters, mermaids, businessmen, it really doesn't matter what they are.
the thing is to be creative and think...it's a costume and in the dark it doesn't have to be perfect, people will only see em for what......like 10 seconds at night at the door ? wands are easy, or cut cardboard and spray with paint to make props..swords, shields, hats, etc............good luck, have fun
