I have only sold like 20 times, but never to an absolute first time user. Received the money order 17 days after the auction ended, so I can't say they sent payment quickly. With communications, I sent them 6 emails, they sent me 4, but none of them seemed to be answering anything I asked them, leading me to believe they never got mine. I sent them responses through the ebay system & even directly to their email address.
The last one I sent they responded with confusion that they sent me the money order, how much more money do I need for them to send, etc. They still didn't answer my question of their choice of shipping. So I said I'd just guess & send them the tracking number. They even gave feedback before I got the payment.
My question is: Since I am the first to leave feedback, I don't want to leave negative or neutral. I don't want to lie & say fast payment, great communication, etc. They're new & don't know what they're doing. Do I just say "thanks" & that's all?

Just a Thanks should be fine. They are new & they will learn quickly on Ebay. Give them the benefit of the doubt. I had someone win something once from me & send me an email saying "I am new. How does this work? Do you send me the item & then I send the money?" Some people just do not know.
Hard to understand, but it happens.

From my experience with ebay, you need to let them know to send payment no more that one week after winning. Then state that they will get a negative after that and you will put it back to be bid on again. People will try to take advantage just like that person did. You are trying to make your business successful and you don't need people messing that up. Change your site and explain why. Only accept paypal and checks but let them know that once the checks have cleared then you will mail them the item. As for the person that took forever, just give them a neutral and say thanks for payment but lack of communication.

i agree with you, it would not be a good thing for a new ebayer to get a neutral on their first transaction. though i think it would be hard to give anything better than a neutral to someone who took so long to pay. if you have gotten your payment, and it has cleared, then you might want to say something like 'there were some minor issues, but those were resolved.' then go ahead and give them the positive, since they did pay (eventually).
you may want to consider putting a time limit on payments in your future listings. i think it would be reasonable to expect your payment within 7 days of the close of the auction.

make it a rule to return positive feedback. There are many cases where you leave a positive feedback and fussy buyer leaves a negative. Hold the feedback as insurance and only post it once they've left you a positive. Many ebays state this in their postings "Once you've left a positive feedback for us. we'll return the positive feedback for you".
Make sure that money order is from the bank, not western union. As a fellow ebay seller, I'd hate to see another new ebayer get their bank accounts drained by a scammer.
I'd give them a postive, and say "thanks, but lack of communication and slow payment."

I say be honest about it and write something in the feedback about his lateness or his lack of replies. The person has to learn that you gotta know how to deal with people on ebay, if you're too nice, he might think what he did was ok. If anything, you'd be helping him out by pointing out his faults.

Hi, you have a good question there. Neutral would be honest wouldn't it? You could give an explanation:
Payment 17 days, 1st time buyer, could communicate better.
Or something like that. It's nice that you want to be fair, too bad someone put you in that position.

In a situation like that, I generally leave a message like "Thanks for the payment. Enjoy your item!" I agree with you about wanting to cut the new person some slack without lieing.

yeah, just say thanks, they paid you
allow for some slack
in the future maybe only one email every 2 weeks
maybe somebody really didn't have it, maybe they were just confused.
if they have the guts to at least answer the email, give them some slack.
just thanks in this case, maybe in ten years its you in that situation, crazy , poor whatever

You got it! Just say thanks and leave it at that. I have done the same with sellers that ship slow or charge to much for shipping.
