Because they are deities associated with agriculture: grain and the vine.

The Greeks didn't always think of people and places as different things. For example, Gaia was the earth and a goddess. Just as Uranus was the sky and a god.

Dioynsus and Demeter, however were patron gods of the earth as apposed to gods who were more in charge of ideals like love, courage and power. You can see the fruits of the earth with your eyes unlike courage or power (for the record you can only see symbols or temporary embodiements of it) Demeter and Dionysus called earth home because that's where they were needed by the Greeks.

Demeter is a goddess of earth, an Earth Mother; and Dionysus is god of the wine or divine intoxication. Both are well suited for earth and earthiness.

Jesus definitely never said "Call no man father...." because he didn't speak English. English is a mongrel language. It has absorbed many other languages. That is why the same word can mean something entirely different according to how it is being used. Another thing words take on new meanings. Bing Crosby sung a song where he said he felt "happy and gay." The word "gay" didn't have the same meaning. Also we have many words for the same thing. So the English translators shows to use the word "Father." A lot of people with their literal interpretations don't realize in the long run they are not reading the original text. But you can't argue with them. They are too thick headed. I know once I was talking and I said something about John the Baptiser. A woman who is Baptist got very upset. That wasn't right! I explained the words mean the same and it is just a matter of which word the translator chose. Some Catholic Bibles have Baptist and some have Baptiser. Someone came up the word used in Aramaic. She wanted to do know which was it Baptist or Baptiser. The answer she got - the definition is one who baptises.

Actually yes. Demeter was the goddess of Harvest and she should have been down on earth with her beloved crops, to bless the farmers that planted them. Dionysis should have been down there because he was god of wine and wine is made from grapes, and isn't in Olympus because Gods drink ambrosia, he also wanted to be with his friends the Satyr. Like Pan.

Dionysus was drunk all the time and Olympus was pretty high mountain. Climbing there was pain in the *** for him.
Demeter (as goddess of agriculture) was probably well fed,
and too fat to climb there! :-)
