Hello! I grauated a year ago with a BS in Communications, emphasizing in broadcast journalism. I sort of fell into the major becasue it seemed interesting and I was good at it. However, the pay is very low to start out (~$8.50/hour, no benefits). I would also have to move to start working in a small town to gain experience. I'm concened that it would be tough to survive on that pay while I work my way into a larger market. So, I'm looking into other options. I have taken tons of courses concerning writing, (news editorial as well as typical essay stuff), public speaking, and video-related techniques. I was considering PR or HR, the later of which I don't think I presently qualify for (no experience with PeopleSoft, payroll, etc.). I don't have a portfolio or experience with PR campaigns or duties, so my qualifications in that area may be dubious as well. Any advice?

a BS in Communications? WOW
you didnt say where you live but that would have a bearing on your decision. (wether or not you are willing to move)
If you want to stay in communications you will need to start with an apprenticeship with a television network. or radio show.
Yea, i know, it doesn't pay much but if you are energetic, a quick study, etc. you could moveup quickly.
You may even get your own show.
How about becoming a radio show producer?
or announcer. There are also sales positions available as well as copy editors
My brother in law was a Photo Journalist who did not want to move out of his small town so he went to work as a Photographer at the local tv station and eventually became the News Director.
Your future is up to you. Best of Luck

At that pay rate, you could probably get an entry-level position in HR and learn the software, as well as pick up experience. I would definitely skip broadcasting jobs...dead end for 99%.

My personal opinion for you or anyone who is stuck with career progression is to work for the government or the military.
In the military you can become an officer and get great job experience.

8.50 an hour is to low and before you know it you have bills and financial responsibilities then you end up not being able to leave your job and you become a corporate slave with a dead end job.

Try working for the U.S. Government. Uncle Sam is hiring around the country now (the start of the fiscal year is Oct. 1).
