I think that the only hostages taken in this respect, are those who believe Americans are the problem and if we weren't so 'loathesome' we'd be fine and terrorism would disappear.
Rage is terrorism's de facto currency. The more rage, the more support, the more support, the more funding and the more funding, the more terrorism we can expect.
Rage is a personal decision. Americans have a high tolerance for insult and innuendo. Radical Islam may not.
You can still say what you like when you like for the most part, and the government and media attempts to indirectly censor public thought and discourse on sensitive topics is very unpatriotic. Honesty is what keeps productivity and commerce moving. Without honest exchanges and decisions made using honest answers and facts, the whole engine of the global economy falls apart.
Terrorism is a vicious outcry from a part of the world that feels poverty and ignorance are states that cannot be overcome or are someone else's fault, and thereby this state of misery must be proliferated into a worldwide movement against wealth and democracy.
The ignorant wish no positive change, the poor have no personal solutions. There must always be a scapegoat, and it appears the 21st century is the 100 Years of the American Scapegoat.

I would say no, because they don't weild that much actual power. The bark is huge, the bite smaller. But when a dog doesn't give a ****, not matter what the size, he probably has rabbies and you should be afraid.
