The transmission "plugs" into the torque converter, so really all that "goes" into the torque converter, - is the shaft that drives the transmission.

The torque converter is kind of a "clutch" that connects transmissionto flywheel on engine. This is turn "slips enough fluid" out at low rpms to let the car sit still while in gear, - when you speed the engine up, - not enough fluid can bypass the "vanes" in converter, and power is applied to transmission to move car!

You lose a percentage of power at "takeoff" from stop, and some slippage occours whenever you accelerate appreciably, - this "costs" you a little mileage (as compared to a standard transmission car). This is the price you pay for not moving your left foot, and your right hand occasionally!
