I have three kids 2 without pain meds. I learned a technique where you imagine a very relaxing place that you are comfortable in. For me it was a beach with warm sun and water and a breeze. Then start practicing... I would lay down and think about my place, using all my senses. What would I see? Then envision it. What would I hear (ocean waves, leaves rustling). What would I smell? What would touch/feel? As I worked through each of these things I would relax and could put myself there. I got to the point where I could smell the salt air and feel the cool water of the ocean on my feet, and the sand under me. Before I went into labor I had worked to the point where I'd fall asleep, I was so relaxed. It worked for both labor and deliveries. I still use it currently when I can't fall asleep at night.
Good Luck

My friend told me a novel thing to do. She said before the contractions get too close together and too painful, choose a brightly coloured object in the room (I chose a bright green First Aid box with a white cross on it!) then when the pains start to come on, really concentrate on that object. Stare it at and will it to move or change colour or something, it doesn't really matter what so long as you only concentrate on that object and focus solely on it. Obviously, it didn't stop the pain but it definitely helped me (along with the 2 shots of pethidine! LOL) get through.
You'll be fine! Good luck and it is all worth it in the end! x

for my first i had all natural labor. it sucked. i remember very little of the birth, as I was more focused on the breathing and the pain. for my second i got an epidural, preceded by Demerol. i was able to focus on the good, the baby was born quicker than my first (although it usually is anyway) and i was feeling less pain in coming days, as i didnt work quite as hard. im not pushing the needle, i just think it helps. i know itll help me with baby #3!

Breathing is what got me through it. You can't make it easier that is why they call it labor.

Breathing exercises. Get in a class.
Do other walking, etc exercise now. The more active, the better and more in control you'll feel.

Labor is PAIN. Don't tense up and breath thru pains. Don't hold your breath.
