For a newbie, can there be any other choice than Year One and Year Two? They give an account of Batman starting out which is decent. Knightfall is good along with the whole No Man's Land series.

"The Dark Knight Returns", "The Killing Joke", and the Loeb / Sale Batman stories--it's hard to go wrong with any of these three.
