Metropolis- Fritz Lang. This film has got to be a cinematic masterpiece, the ultimate film.
It also provides an interesting warning about the dangers of domination, love and jealousy, social divides, and the Utopian society which the city is meant to represent.
It was also Adolf Hitlers favourite film, and provides an interesting contrast with the Nazi message- that Hitler was rescuing the 'enslaved' German Aryan race from the tyranny of the rich Jews, just as Freder rescues Maria and the slave workers from the rich owners who live in Metropolis. Adolf Hitler also wanted to create a Metropolis of his own ny rebuilding Berlin

Good question Thinker. Can't limit myself to one, original "goodbye Mr chips" is an old old film, as is "it's a wonderful life" but they both have a warming effect on the heart and soul, and show what things can be like, when you respect others. Oh and EVERYONE should listen to Joan Baez, "there but for fortune" now and again, just to remind ourselves how lucky we are.

I believe that every child should watch "The Goonies". It was one of the best coming of age movies I saw. Not only did brothers bond, bullies became allies all for the greater good. Close second would be Lean On Me.

I've always loved a movie called Angus... It's silly, but it has a great moral about not caring what others think about you. It's about a fat kid who gets picked on, and in the end he goes off on the popular jerk and punches him, to the applause of the whole school.
As far as classics go, The Wizard of Oz is wonderful.

Where the red fern grows, National Velvet, and Charlottes's Web. All have life lessons, and are wonderful compassionate, and heartwarming movies.
