build a good relationship with your boss, turn things in earlier than expected and basically exceed expectations. dressing properly and having good manners will always be a plus. Just make sure you stand out for your good work ethics and there's no way your boss could refuse you of a promotion.

Classic situation. Many are the people who actually do most of the work and well, despite the big footprints on their back from being leapfrogged to promtion by idiots!!

Unfortunatley it is not a fair world.

Often these idiots are promted for one (or all of the above)

Nepotism
A**** lickin
"thye look teh part"?!! (all glitter and no substance), e,g, attractive, well dressed, not fat, small, tall, minority, woman, whatever prejudices are
They went to the right school/Uni (old school, same as boss)
Many ways

Often those left behind in the dust of the inadequates rapid rise to glory, have trained the ingrates, and are told patronising things like no problem with your work, but you don't have (fill the blanks, management skills, what it takes?!!, need longer, require further building of strenghts and other such rubbish.

Very rarely do they offer any solution to fill in these so called small gap's that will enable you to be the complete package.

Best advice is to do what many have done before, look for an opportunity where you nwill be appreciated, be prepared to hear some uncomfrtable feedback fro your nearest and dearest when asking for some pointers (invariably it will start with lose some wight, get a haricut, buty new clothes, and go down hill from there). Sadly in the real world of work too many appearnace does not matter more than substance, and the ability to chatter endlesely about the most inane things, and be one of the boys/girls while holding a file and looking/insisting you are very busy?!!

Some people take P/T courses to get the next rung of qualifcations (NB: this is also unseful to Network for those better opportunties), or leave altogether and do Full Time (obviously lots of plaaning required if would do that)!

The other route is to take a lead from the man Machievelli, and become as underhand and manipulative as the rest (but better, much, much better)!!!!

Either way eventually you will rise to the tiop and knwo you will have the day when the idiots are cmoing to you looking for a promotion (when you were thinking more like the sack)!!

However, tht is only if you really want to buy ito the rat rce and potantially beocme bitter and twisted.

Better still to look at what interests you most, and make a plan to end up doing that for a living so you live to work, not work to live.

All the better become self employed (take all theri trade, if same area), or not, and only have uourself to answer to, no bigger promotion than being your won bos.

Whatever you do, remember like so many relationships and not's you, it's them.......

Best of luck in the future .

My advice to people on these matters is to learn everything about what it is you do and, if possible, learn the job of those who "outrank" you. Then you will be ready for a promotion. If they chose not to promote you, you will have skills that can be put to better use elsewhere. Never settle for just knowing the basics of the job you do, keep pushing forward.

It's not so much as brown nosing, but you just need to be really friendly and talkative with your boss/manager.

I find that even if the social person is an idiot, just because they're talkative (works best if you're a girl with a guy boss) they get promoted.

Hard work is only 50% of the criteria.

You have make sure you get noticed and recognised by the right people for your hard work.

honestly? kiss azz and snitch on your co-workers. apparently that seems to work in most office environments. working hard is for suckers these days and never gets noticed. if it does, only means that they'll pile more work on you so they can leave earlier. pays to be sneaky and under handed more than hard working. sad but true.
