Well, I'm one of those who can't afford the luxury of having laundry machines at home.

VERY DIRTY!!!

I'm petrified of Staph infections, the laundry room is the second most likely place to get this dreaded illness (the first being the Hospital) - plus, just look around the thing - pubic hairs, weird sticky substances.

I SOOO hate the laundry faciliites. If you can, even if you can't really afford it, get your own machines!

If you don't have a choice then your only option is to use a public facility. Just check them before you use them. Alot of people put too much clothing into the washer which makes it impossible for them to receive a thorough washing and rinsing so the residue has to be left somewhere doesn't it. Some people don't wash their clothing at all they just put it into the dryer. Always, check the dryers first somethime fecal matter can be found within the drum etc...
The better public facilities usually wipe out everything at night prior to closing so if at all possible try to get there upon their reopening. When you are in a position to have your own machines you will notice the extreme difference in your clothing.

I once used the laundry facilities in apartments I lived in and those were fine. You shouldn't pick up anything on your clothes. Just wash your hands when you leave.

Having a washing machine is not a luxury - it actually is a money saver. Laundry facilities are notorious for fecal matter. Sure, it's "clean" fecal matter but it's fecal matter (just like movie theatre seats, etc).

The rinse cycle rinses out the machine and there are only clean clothes in the dryer so they're not that bad.

I once, not too long ago read where if there is poop on something that it takes really, really hot water to kill the germs. So, saying that I would think not.

It varies. Some are well-kept and well attended. Others are not and so end up getting EXTREMELY dirty.

Use detergents with bleach. Bleach is also like a germ killer disinfectant.

it really depends on which one you go too. I was at one with a friend and it had roaches. Very gross! Use your senses. If it doesn't look or smell right, don't go.
