You're obviously not American. It was tried in the early part of the 20th century - to completely ban alcohoMF It didn't work: people still bought liquor, only bootleg or illegal alcohol, and the Mafia managed to get a strong toehold into American society based on the fact that it would produce illegal alcohoMF
Still, I agree it's hyprocrisy to ban certain drugs while alcohol is allowed to be sold and consumed very easily.

Alcohol was banned in the USA, and that caused a terrible wave of crime. Now it's the same with those drugs that are now illegal.
The government fears, that if it became legal to produce cocaine, those nations which produce the stuff became stronger, and these nations have often left wing governments.

Government = Hyprocrisy.
Two examples. One President arguing in court what the word 'is' means. One President arguing that waterboarding is not torture.
Another one. How come the "Land of the Free" has more people locked up than every other apparently "Land of not-so-Free" combined?
Yet another one. "We will help people to get off welfare," means, "We will cut people off welfare."
How about this. "We will cut taxes and lower the deficit," means, "Taxes for the rich will be slashed and the workers will have to make it up....forget about the deficit part please."
Then there's, "We must raise taxes on cigarettes to save the children," which means, " Cigarette tax is a huge cash cow and we can raise it with impunity if we say it's for the kids."
Finally alcohol taxes and excise are another huge cash cow, the government's hands are tied,,,,,they've done their best by imposing huge fines on drinking drivers creating another huge cash cow.

Common sense does not make policy in America, money does. The war on drugs is real and the first casualty in war is truth.

Yes, it's hypocrisy. But it's also a matter of tradition.
Alcohol had a long established tradition, so much so that even a constitutional amendment was not enough to keep it illegal.
Other drugs did not, and did not have enough of a lobby to protect.

If alcohol was to be banned or the sales declined dramatically taxes would increase no end. The same as cigarettes. It's all about money.
