A magnet anywhere in the earth's magnetic field would tend to align itself with the direction of the magnetic flux lines at that point. At the magnetic poles on the surface of the earth, the flux lines are vertical. A magnet perfectly aligned with the flux lines of a uniform magnetic field experiences no force from that field.
