First let me start out with a formal definition from wikipedia:

"Politics is the process by which groups make decisions. Although the term is generally applied to behavior within governments, politics is observed in all human (and many non-human) group interactions, including corporate, academic, and religious institutions.

Political science (also political studies) is the study of political behavior and examines the acquisition and application of power."

You see, politics is so incredibly important because politics literally controls the power in our country. Think about it... the ppl behind all of our laws, the taxes we pay, the wages we make and even down to whether or not we have to wear a seat belt while driving, are all politicians.

It amazes me in this country how the vast majority just go about their daily life without a care in the world as to what most politicians are doing... the decisions they are making... the way those politicians are spending their tax dollars.

The purpose depends on where you live. In developing countries, the purpose is to make fast money without the hard work that goes with it. In other places, it may be for service. Man is said to be a political animal so that may be why it is the most important human association.

At the most basic level, politics determine the ground rules for how we co-exist.

For instance, enough people at the beginning of things decided it was a bad idea to allow people to settle problems by dueling or bonking each other over the head when we disagree. So now we have rules against such.

We're overthinking things a bit now, if you ask me. The constitution pretty much covers all the basic ways people here & now deal with each other. We're letting our emotions lead us to muck things up.

I've always viewed politics as a skill needed to obtain and maintain resources needed for functioning - like office politics.

All countries need to obtain and maintain resources for the survival of their citizens and themselves - otherwise the leaders would hog the resources and the citizens would be allowed to die.
