For the longest time when we wash clothes, the clothes have an odd smell to them. We've tried different detergents, fabric softeners, and all that, but the smell remains. We thought perhaps moisture in the laundry room, so we moved them into a closet. The closets are walk-ins from the bathroom, though, so they keep the same smell.

Could this odd-smell off clothes be alarming and travel in public, and what can I do to help it?

don't leave your clothes in the washer or dirty clothes basket wet--immediately start the wash and then immediately put them in dryer--check to make sure they are completely dry--add baking soda to get rid of musty smell to the initial wash once or twice.

I just recently had this very same problem. Even though I put the clothes right in the dryer as soon as the washer stopped. I found out that I was not using enough detergent and fabric softener. I was trying to be cheap. Add a little more of both and see if that makes a difference. It did for me.

yea, i would be able to smell it a mile away, i am anal about how my laundry smells, people tell me "your kids alway smell so good." i am so bad about it that i keep a spray bottle of gain fabric softener and water to spray on their clothes and backpacks. i had a friend come over and i knew exactly why her son's clothes smelled the way they did. (i smelled it from across the room!) she left the laundry in the washing machine too long. if you really want to get it all out you will have to rewash the load of laundry before you put it into the dryer if it has been sitting for more than a couple hours. BTW, we have well water. it is wonderful.

The only thing that I can think of is something that my husband is really sensitive to...if you leave the clothes in the wash for too long (post washing them) before you put them in the dryer, they can get a strong musty smell. I don't notice it that much, but my husband will notice it instantly...even if I throw the clothes in the dryer two hours after they are done in the wash, my husband will have to re-wash them because or the musty smell. He's very sensitive to it. So these days, I have to put the clothes in the dryer IMMEDIATELY after they are done in the wash. Kind of obsessive, but whatever.

sounds ike you've truly confusing water. attempt this... upload a million cup of baking soda to the water. which will make your cleaners artwork more advantageous acceptable by making use of binding up lots of the minerals interior the water and 'getting them out of ways' so as that your detergents can artwork more advantageous acceptable. together, upload a million cup of white vinegar to the wash or rinse cycle. this can remove the musty smell. The musty smell may extremely be from the iron interior the water. if it truly is the case, i ought to apply a million/2 cup of baking soda in each wash.

Just a question - but are you leaving the clothes in the washing machine for awhile before transferring to the dryer? That will definately cause this problem.

Sometimes this happens if you don't thoroughly dry your laundry. Even the slightest amount of dampness causes this "sour" kind of odor. Leave them in the dryer for a few minutes longer and see if that helps.

Try leaving sachets of pleasant-smelling herbs or salts among your clothes and see if that helps. I have spray bottles of cologne that I leave in my drawers.

Good luck!
