It is a 97 explorer in otherwise great condition. The transmission needs to be in 2nd instead of drive to engage.

Research the cost of repair versus the difference you can sell it for. The answer will drive your decision.

Take the car to a transmission shop and have them check it out. If it is in "valve body", such as a plugged passage, - it may not cost much to repair! This part can be removed and rebuilt/repaired without removing the transmission.

Selling as - is, - will not get you much, as everybody wants to get a "cheap car"-that doesn't need expensive repairs to drive! You might also check with junkyards, and get a used one that works - which will cost you (probably) less than 1/2 price of rebuild.
This includes the labor to remove and replace, - (which will be about the same either way!)

Also you might try a "transmission conditioning" treatment, maybe it would loosen junk caught (if this is case) and make transmission work again! Buy at auto parts suply store.

Transmissions are expensive to repair and you certainly don't want to to the expense to replace it. I'd get an estimate and, based on that, probably sell the car "as is" -- after all, it is ten years old. Just make sure it is clean and shiny and the price is reasonable for the amount of mileage on it

Sell it to a person who is well aware of the problems so you dont rip someone off. If you do fix it, drive it for awhile after because I dont think you will be able to sell it for how much that trans costs

that would depend on if you want to sell it or give it away. If you want a fair market price then fix the transmission first

have the transmission repair quoted and then decide from there, a broken transmission will decrease your resale value, so it may be worth it to fix if it is a minor problem

you should sell it as is, the money you get out of it running will not cover the difference of fixing the transmition, just let them know about it, or they could hold you responsable if it goes out like say over a rail road track and someone gets hurt

If you can ad the price of the repair to the asking price then yesI can't see being able to get much for it if the tranny is messed up.

Fix the transmission. You won't get much for it if you don't.
