I suggest you get "Depeche Mode 101" and "Violator". If you are able to get your hands on the "Shake the Disease" single, do it. It's a must-have single that includes a very rare song "Flexible".
It's kinda difficult to answer your question, because I like all Depeche Mode albums. They all speak to me in a different way and each album relates to a specific time or period in my life.
I fell in love with DM, when I first heard "Strangelove", but only because it sounded "cool". And then I started listening to others and got hooked. I now own a lot of their cd's and some bootlegged stuff as well. I've seen them twice in Cape Town at back- to- back concerts. Which means, I left the one concert and immediately started queing for the following one the next day.
Depeche Mode 101 is a live recording from a concert they held at the Pasadena Rose Bowl. It is brilliant and everyone should have a copy. I have three copies myself. Don't ask me why.
In the end you have to choose for yourself. What kind of music do you like? Depeche Mode has done from Rock to Classic Beethoven!
Look at this list and choose for yourself:
1981 Speak and Spell (catchy and upbeat)
1982 A Broken Frame ( post-punk/synthpop)
1983 Construction Time Again ( bridges the pop of their previous two albums and the gloom of their following albums)
1984 Some Great Reward ( strong melody lines and awesome lyrics)
1986 Black Celebration (extremely gothic)
1987 Music for the Masses (mix of pop, rock and alternative)
1989 101 [live] (excellent album, is all I can say)
1990 Violator ( techno and house music)
1993 Songs of Faith & Devotion (soulful)
1993 Songs of Faith & Devotion Live ( track-by-track reproduction of the album listed above, only this one is live)
1997 Ultra ( very raw and the rhythm is very pulsating)
2001 Exciter (songs about living the fast life)
2005 Playing the Angel (a return to dark, brooding greatness)

You might want to try the 'The Singles 86-98', thats got a bunch of the good old songs and a lot of the new ones. This will help you decide which sound of depeche mode you like. I know that sounds weird but pretty much every album is different sounding.

It's not necessarily in chronological order, but "Violator" is a pretty good album to start with. It's got "Enjoy the Silence," "Policy of Truth" and "Personal Jesus."
Hope that helps.

I say "Music For The Masses". That's the album that really launched them. "Violator" is a close second.
