The Rules of Tennis state quite clearly that you're not allowed to distract your opponent, and Maria's grunting is definitely a distraction.
Why haven't any of Maria's opponents objected to the chair umpire and tournament referee as yet?
A woman as good a tennis player as Maria Sharapova shouldn't need to grunt.

When practicing Tae-Kwon-Do you are encouraged to grunt and yell. According to the sport's philosophy it helps you release your inner energy and concentrate it in the physical move.
Tennis is not Tae-Kwon-Do, I know but I believe Sharapova does it for the same reason not to draw attention or trying to distract her opponent and as she becomes more confident of her own strength the grunting will decrease. If you've followed her during the summer you probably noticed she is doing it less.

Yeah, I know, it's weird. In high school, my tennis coach made us all grunt one day. Anytime we hit the ball we had to grunt. We all ended up hitting the ball way far out of the court. Like, I guess the grunt gave us extra power or something.. and I imagine that being on her level, she could take that extra energy and power and control it into an 'in' hit. (We couldn't.. but I mean, we stunk anyway).

She says that it releases the energy she saves up to put into her stroke. A lot of Bollitieri's students did the same thing, especially Monica Seles, who used to be the loudest.
I think it's impossible to say why, but I think it's a combination of physical and mental reasons.

I'm not sure but it sure is loud and sickening!!!! I'd probably guess it's because she is intimidated by the vicious facial expressions of her father.

some players get annoyed when the girl grunts all the time and lose their focus. So I think ONE of the reasons is intimidation. maybe?

No, it's not for added attention. It's so that she can release all that power and energy. Or maybe to release anger and emotion... some players do better when they show their emotions on court.
Please refer to Craig S's answer and link. :-)

Cause she is thinking of me and it in turns makes me think of her.........just a means to let out the tension in my opinion.....Monica Seles was probably the worst ever in "grunting" almost irritating and in case of Sharapova she's "Oh so Pretty" for me to object!!
