So many people claim that Bush is trampling the Constitution and taking away our freedoms. I would just like to know what freedoms you think you use to have that you no longer do.

aussieblonde- you’ve always had to go through searches to get on a plane, not sure how that affects your freedom... you can still get on the plane.

sprawlkills - so Bush created capitalism? What systems allows more economic freedom? What does this have to do with my question?

The vast majority of working- and middle-class Americans have lost economic freedom. Our corrupt political system has also created a corrupt economic system that is designed to make the rich richer and everyone else poorer. Economic inequality is terrible and getting worse. The odds of becoming financially successful when you come from a modest background have gotten worse. See the book Delusional Democracy.

I believe that this is mostly a canard that those who don't like Bush like to use as their reason for hating the guy. Given that these same people can't tell the difference between a right and a luxury, I think that tells you all you need to know.

Getting on a plane is not a right. Getting married is not a right. Sadly, we have allowed the left to totally destroy the meaning of Constitutional rights.

I think it's that he's taking actions now that could--probably will--become "slippery slope" problems.

For instance, if you take away one group's right to privacy (foreign born citizens), how can you guarantee that it stops there? You can't.

This has historically been a challenge for free societies. Personally, I'd like to think my country is up to the challenge of doing the right thing in the right way. . . I wish we didn't constantly have to justify actions that are morally, ethically, and philosophically questionable.

Let's say you live on a street. But you never go out of your house, and nobody comes to visit you. Would you care if the govt came along and closed the street, or tore it out entirely? Probably not. But the people who do use that street care very much.

In honor of Pastor Martin Niemöller:

First they came for the 6th Amendment, but I hadn't been accused of a crime, so I didn't object to denial of counsel.

Then they came for the 4th Amendment, but I wasn't talking to anyone overseas, so they wouldn't be monitoring me.

Then they came for the rest of the 4th Amendment, but I only called my mother, so there was nothing suspicious in my phone records.

Then they came for the 1st Amendment, but I never associated with criminals, so I didn't worry about being convicted purely based on what other people might do.

Then they came for the 14th Amendment, but I never really understood the rules for Due Process (and wasn't allowed an attorney), so I didn't object.

Then they came for the rest of the 1st Amendment, but I never told anyone about what the government was doing, so again I remained silent.

Then they came for the 5th Amendment, ...... and I no longer had the right to remain silent.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Those were MY rights that were taken. Just because I hadn't personally exercised them doesn't make them any less mine.
And just because you might not have personally needed them doesn't make them any less yours.
Democrats are mad because they have lost the right to call their terrorist friends overseas on the phone. Because they will be wiretapped.
I guess they could still write letters......
