As a real reporter, you are bound by the the ideals and ethics of your profession. As a human being, you are bound by the morals and standards you live by. Some times it's hard to be both. And sometimes it's hard to see the big picture. As much as the idea suck, it may be for the best if the truth was told. You cannot control other people's reactions but you also do not have the right to withhold the truth from the world. That is a hard position you are in. Whatever decision you make, also decide that you will not regret it. That will hurt you more in the end.

If the story that I am "Potentially" reporting on is about people being wrongfully treated and potentially dying anyway. What do I have to lose since the violence will go on whether I Report it or not? This being the worse case scenario!
The best case scenario.; being that I report on the story and bring major exposure and recognition to it and have people, Authorities, Nations etc. more aware of a situation that they may not have otherwise known the extent of, causing an out pouring of assistance, and Justice to be implemented, that may not have (otherwise happened) had I NOT reported on the story.
Nothing Risked, Nothing Gained - Isn't that why people become Reporters!

Excellent question; I believe being a big time editor means big time responsibilities. In essence, what greater good would it do to harm innocent people with a sensualized story. News should be informative for: safety, harm, encouragement and to allow the masses a fair and balance avenue to make proper decisions. Telling the truth in your hypothetical scenario would amount to no good overall. I wouldn't release the story, unless harm was imminent for those members of said religion.

Thats a very good question and gets to the heart of reporting ethics. The problem is that someone, ethical or not, will eventually report on the story, so by you not reporting you aren't saving lives. You would, however, be absolved of being part of the cause.
The problem, in the news reports that you are drawing from (I am assuming the Pope's quote), is that the one who would be causing the potential deaths, etc. should not have said what he did. But, like I said, this is a really difficult ethical question.

Of course not!!! We should supress the truth for a false sense of calm. In addition we should all come around to the other persons way of thinking... that will promote peace and harmony. If you don't believe it now, don't worry, you will soon enough. Isn't that a lofty goal.

I wouldn't do it. Life is more important than truth in my opinion. There is enough violence in this world, why add to it?
