there are a lot of free scans out there.
My favorite is Hijack this!
It will tell you what's running on your computer.
Keep in mind - just because your computer is 'acting up' doesn't mean you have a virus.
You might have a hardware problem that's just starting. --- You need to be careful before you delete things that are running (they might be needed)
If you run a scan and you're unsure about the file(s) that are found in your system - you can email me and I can help you look into it to see if it is something you need.

I agree with JibberJab also, the reason why is because of two things.....1st is that you run spy and virus protection regularly...I use Spybot S&D, along with BitDefender----NOTHING has gotten by on this Computer. But I do run Spybot once a week, so I get about 3 regular bots due to where I go and what I do....no problem.
Next is the fact that ONLY your monitor is affected...most viruses are destructive to programming and programs, hard drives etc.... Most monitors are not the target, but may display the signature of a hack at the most....just to make you pull plugs and press buttons while wetting your pants LOL.
When a monitor starts to require service, you'll have about 7- 10 years on an older CRT style of monitor. Solder connections and , capacitors start to cause problems especially with the horizontal circuitry .....best way to describe the pictures.....Squiggly pix, Picture that falls over to the left and becomes many levels of picture/black/picture/black.....

Go to the Microsoft website and print "windows defender beta 2" This is a anti virus software and do a scan then look at the results. It is a good anti virus software tool.
OR --------you can open your browser ---------and print http:\\safety.live.com. then run or ok ! that will scan and fix any problems. INFACT DO THE http:\\safety.live.com FIRST. IF THAT SAYS YOU HAVE A PROBLEM IT FIXES IT FOR YOU ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS WATCH. (hope this is helpfull)

You need to have a variety of protection sytem to cover the different malware problems on the net. Sugest you get any of these free products you dont have, then run them to clean up your system.
Antiviral. (free)
AVG free. Excellent protection available from: http://www.Grisoft.com
Don't use two antiviral products together as they may be incompatible. If your Antiviral trial has run out, then remove product from your computer and get the AVG installed.
Anti-spyware (all free)
Essential products are: Adaware SE from: http://www.lavasoft.com
Spybot SD http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html
Spywareblaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
Windows Defender - from Microsoft downloads.
Spycatcher
http://www.tenebril.com/consumer/spyware/spycatcher-express.php
PC starter kit at download.com 20 of the best recommended programes for people new or less advanced in computers. Check all three pages, at bottom see Security/Tools/Fun
http://www.download.com/PC-Starter-Kit/2001-12350_4-0.html?tag=dir
C Cleaner. http://www.ccleaner.com/
This will tell you a lot about what is on your computer, such as running programmes, cookies, History, settings etc. and will help you clean up and remove unwanted items. Be careful how you use it as it is a very powerful programme and you should read the help index before you do anything with it.

A scrambled screen means that you are having problems with either your monitor, your video card or your video driver. Very doubtful that it is any malware. Try another monitor if one is availble. If that doesnt work, download and install the latest driver from your video card's manufactures website. Or your video card has come lose from its slot or the connecting cable may be bad.
Good luck.
