No. They cannot bite people. The long pointy bit at the back isn't a sting either. It is an ovipositor, designed to allow the Crane fly to lay her eggs in the soil. The eggs hatch out into Leather Jackets, grey grubs who eat the roots of grass. When you see starlings and other birds on a lawn poking bout into the ground, that's what they are looking for, nice tasty Leather Jackets.
Leather Jackets make the grass of a lawn go yellow, and die. They are pests, but the Crane fly is just irritating when it comes indoors.

No. In the UK (at least) what we call Daddy Long Legs are Crane Flies. Those big flappy fly's that plague our houses for a few days of the year.
In America, the Daddy Long Legs is a type of spider, I think we do get them here too, but not sure of the name (I call them Spindles). They are the insects with the poison, but they can't puncture human skin to administer it. Thank god!

They are two different creatures.

Daddy long legs - no wings & a small round body.

Crane fly - well, has wings, long body...and a poor sense of direction!!

There is a MYTH that daddy long legs venom is 'the most deadly' - it isn't. This was conclusively DISPROVED on Mythbusters. (Discovery Channel) It IS venomous, but NOT highly dangerous to humans - even if the quantity of venom was increased.

Many Crane flies do not eat during their 5 to 10 day adult life. Those that do tend only to eat nectar. So not much point having a venomous bite.

Daddy long legs have venom, but their mouths are too small to actually transfer the venom. So, they are virtually harmless, unless you kill them and dissect them and get to the venom in them. Which would be totally gross, by the way.

The Crane Fly has the deadliest venom of any insect, luckily for us, it is unable to sting or bite!

Crane flies are actually the rather good sized mosquito looking creatures you see buzzing around walls in the summer.

Daddy Long Legs are poisonous, but their jaws are so small that they are of no danger to human beings.

Nope. Infact, Crane Flies cannot bite.

Recently I hear they are venomous but dont have the ability to bite, so they are harmless to us...don't know if this is true though

Noooooooooo! I think that should have emphasised that enough.

The old tale about them having the worlds most venemous poison but not having long enough teeth to inject humans with it is utter nonsense. They barely have enough venom to harm the tiniest of insects, let alone us.
