measure the volume, boil for x amount of minutes, then re-measure volume - if any of the liquid has evaporated then it contained water.

Do not boil, evaporate or try to separate unless the boiling points of the two liquids are pretty far apart. All this will prove is that there is volitile matter present. It could bewater, but it could also be pretty much any other clear solvent. You could measure the Specific Gravity of your liquid which may help, or perhaps the viscosity. We use a machine at work called a Karl Fischer which actually measures water content in any liquid. It is probably the only real way to answer your question.

just boiling the liquid wont work as any liquid present with a lower boil point will evaporate also. condense some of the vapour when you boil the liquid and add a drop of silver nitrate solution to the condensed liquid you have collected. if it stays clear you have water

Heat a small quantity of copper sulphate in a test tube, this will drive off the water in its structure and it will go white. If you put a drop of your liquid on this white (anhydrous) copper sulphate it will turn blue if the liquid contains water.

You could try blue cobalt. Water turns it pink. Not p.h paper tho, since the substance might contain water the p.h probably won't be 7....
