Because for the last 50 years or so, our educational system has been geared to the least common denominator. As a result, year after year, our children learn less and less. These days, the average high school graduate learns less than an eigth grader did in 1895. To top that off, we've taken the attitude that the only thing that matters is that our children are "happy", that their needs are paramount. This produces a "me, me, me" mindset that doesn't want to pay attention to anything that isn't "fun", forgetting in the process that ignorance is first cousin to misery.

I'm 15, and I am honestly one of the only kids I know that watches the news. I know world geography well, I love other cultures, and take advantage of all travel opportunies. Most America's youth don't care because they have their Ipods, and politically correct bubble. They're sheltered from the world and their nation. (On 9/11 the classroom I was in, turned off the tv) Maybe I'm weird, but I care about something other than my friends and MTV. A lot of kids that immigranted here from other countries seem to almost forget that where they came from. I have friends from Morocco, Serbia, Romania, Russia, and a few other European and Asian countries. I also think other countries put more importance on learning foreign languages. Here in America a basic knowledge of Spanish is enough.

Yes its true, 60% of American can't read signs. George bush is in the 60%, he didn't know where Pakistan is. Foreigners know more about Americans then the Americans themselve. Outsiders are more interested in America. I think Americans are better off without the contact of the outside world , like Serbia. By the way where is Serbia??

That is untrue for me. I'm 15 and I actually like learning, I don't go to school to gossip and start drama, what a waste of time. I'd rather get an education so i can have a future. I care about the world, I would like to there to be peace amoung nations, religious group and non-believers. I want to help end world hunger/poverty, help the enviroment and let people know that being open-minded is not a bad thing. I guess I fall in the minority category.

You pose a very good question. However, I'm not so sure that the same
isn't true of other people in other countries. American youth doesn't have
the same fascination with other cultures as , say, the youth in your region have
with America. Our education standards are going downhill it seems to me.
Once again, very good question and I hope you get some serious answers
back.

This is mostly because we have raised two generations of people now that believe their personal wants and needs take precedence over everything else. Being lazy comes naturally to such a mindset, and the result is a nation composed in the majority of undereducated egotists.

I think it's not the case only of American youth, it's the case everywhere. Actually, can you name all the American states? I think we should all work on ourselves and not think about do other people think about us. Who cares? You study for yourself, and if someone doesn't know anything, it's his problem.

Because they take up most of their money and time helping people like you and your poverty stricken country get a life. I bet you one thing, if the government of America were to issue you a free pass to get the hell out of America, you'll prefer to be a terrorist target. No, don't give us the answer to your dumb, itching, scratching, invalid question. We know exactly where your country lie - behind God's back , why you think it takes so much money and time to get the ration to you. God bless America.
