Have him get a sleep study done! He may have obstructive sleep apnea, which means that he temporarily stops breathing during his sleep. This prevents him from getting a good night's rest so he may be tired and prone to fall asleep during the day.
As for kicking his legs, he might also have restless leg syndrome, where the legs move involuntarily during sleep. (Ask him if he has any creepy crawly sensations in his leg during the day when his legs are still.)

You can get a doctor to put him on Gabapentin for the leg kicking. Many diabetic people have the same problem. They also have a type of breathing device that a person can wear when they experience not breathing problems while sleeping. You need to get him to a medical center. If he is a Veteran there would be little or no pay.

Do test with a stop watch. Try behavior modification using shock therapy. Every time he sleeps on the sofa, get a bucket of ice water, stand ready for when he kicks, and hit him square with the entire bucket. Time how long it take him to wake. This is what we do at the dorm. Believe me he'll be a light sleeper after that.
If you don't want to do that make sure he has health insurance and see a doctor.

This sounds like sleep apena. He needs to go to the doctor and have a sleep study done. From there they will decide what coarse of action needs to be taken. It sounds like he needs to be put on a cpap machine at night to help him control his breathing better.

It is sleep apnea. Sometimes those breathright strips help by opening nasal passages. Try these if you can get him to wear them.
