Right, more details. Lead actor plays retired detective on the trail of a serial killer. He forms a relationship with single mother, but becomes so obssessed with catching killer that he uses her daughter as bait. He is sure he knows who the killer is, but needs to set a trap to prove it. In the event, the killer crashes and dies on route and mother realises how he has misused their relationship to risk her daughter as bait. She ditches him, he goes mad and becomes a reclusive alcoholic because he has blown his remaining life away, all for nothing. Ends up with him muttering and pacing around his derelict petrol station forecourt almost howling at the sun! Its really bugging me, because I thought it was jack Nicholson, but it isnt and I cant find the movie in the 2004 releases, or even 2003. Im now on a quest to find out, just for the hell of it!

Yes, you're right about Jack Nicholson. The Crossing Guard, 1995. (Maybe you just saw it 2 or 3 years ago :) ).
Whoops, my bad, it was The Pledge, 2001. Both movies have Jack Nicholson, David Morse, Robin Wright Penn, and I think Angelica Huston. Odd.
