Well, let's just assume that there are 290 million people living in the United States, and about half of those are women (145 million), and let's say just for kicks that three-fourths of those women are of menstruating age. That means that there are 108 million women using some kind of tampon or pad 3-7 days every month. 808 injuries and 267 deaths combined is less than 1 percent of the population I would estimate is using tampons or pads, so I think the chances of getting TSS are REMOTE in the extreme. moreover, you say 65% of those women who got sick were using them properly, so that means 698 women got sick who followed directions. out of 100 million people, I honestly think you don't have that much to worry about and that tampons are just as safe as pads to use. I think you have to think about proportions here - your chances of becoming sick or dying from a tampon are probably as rare as dying in an airplane crash.

I think 1000 deaths/ and or injuries in a year among millions of users each and every month is really very slight. I looked on the CDC and I still can't verify your facts either. But why do people continue to drive cars if people die in auto accidents and why do people use birth control pills when there is a risk of stroke and blood clots? Why do people take showers when there is a risk of falling? Why do we use artificial sweeteners when they cause cancer in lab rats? Why do women have babies because I'm sure more women die during childbirth than from tampon use? Why don't we all just stay in our houses and bleed on rags because I'm sure that we could dig up some data on pads causing rashes and irritation and then we wouldn't be able to use those either. There is a risk in almost all that we do and this has got to be the most ridiculous rant I've seen posted on here over and over and over. But then again....I could be one of those ignorant militant women that just doesn't want to face the facts.

Well, I'm on the swim-team, so I have to use them due to our coaches not allowing us to skip out on a whole week of practice due to menstrual problems. I honestly wouldn't worry too much about them. How often to you hear a woman who's cause of death was a tampon? I've been using tampons for the past three years, and as long as you don't keep them in for more than four hours and as long as you don't put more than one in, they're safe. I also use the ones with the lowest absorbency. But I CAN see why you're asking this question because tampons CAN be dangerous. When I'm not swimming, I always just use pads. But Toxic Shock Syndrome is extremely rare, so I wouldn't stress too much about it.

Why do millions of people smoke cigarettes when hundreds of thousands per year die from it.. I think the odds are pretty good for the tampon user.. considering there are 150 million women approx.. lets say 75 million are menstrating.. 267 deaths is pretty low.. besides.. TSS is not only caused by tampons.

I personally choose pads over tampons.
It has absolutely nothing to due with TOXIC SHOCK SYNDROME. ( which I do believe is a condition that PREGNANT women suffer from. Why would a pregnant woman be wearing a TAMPON? She wouldn't!!)
It's all about comfort for me.
Why do people do what they do? What kind of choices do you make in YOUR daily life that could be potentially dangerous?
aspirin/Tylenol/ibuprofen?
drive a car? or a passenger?
take an airplane because it's faster?
smoke? drink alcohol? take any type of medication or supplement? OTC or NOT?
pop/cofee/tea? any caffeine? read your labels!!
do you go out on the sunlight? (sunblock or no sun block?)
do you breathe the exhaust from the car in front of you while waiting at a stop light? those fumes are far worse than an entire carton of cigarettes!
birth control?
do you live breathe and sleep here on earth? if so, you have far more chance of walking out your door and getting mowed over than getting TSS! if you don't get mowed down, then most likely you will end up suffering from cancer or one of the other devastating, crippling diseases that are far more likely to occur than TSS. ( IE: ALZHEIMER'S, ALS, MS, PARKINSON'S ARE ANY NEUROLOGICAL DISEASE. )
Since you aparently have alot of time on your side, maybe you could continue your research about TOXIC SHOCK SYNDROME
Maybe start with a dictionary/wikipidea and look up PROPER and then continue yoor education by looking up the definitions of, DUMB & IDIOT. Print them out along with your question/statement and look at them side by side for awhile. As long as it takes for you to GET IT.
Your QUESTION/STATEMENT is a good look at the type of person you are, and the type of life you live. It also gives a very vivid picture of how you think of (and treat ) others around you. Remember that last sentence as you are looking at YOUR OWN WORDS next to the definitions of YOUR OWN WORDS.
As soon as you start to see the similarities......YOU WILL GET IT!
YOU KNEW YOU WOULD BE GETTING ANGRY RESPONSES. THAT TO ME SAYS THAT YOU ARE EITHER VERY YOUNG OR IN NEED OF ATTENTION ( OR BOTH )

Unfortunately, that's just the way things are. Just as people ignore the dangers of smoking and lack of excercise. But I use them and have never had a problem with Tampons...where did you get that report? Maybe it was companies who sell pads that released that "information".

Because they are more comfortable than messy pads plus I don't like pads because you can't wear a thong and I refuse to put on granny panties...
