A bit ambiguous question, since throughout ages there have been people who discover new places or new routes to places not discovered.

But I guess the 3 most well known were -

Ferdinand Magellan, who was the first to travel round the earth
Marco Polo - the famous Italian who was first to European to China
Christopher Columbus - who found the New Continent

Ook, Glook and Alley Oop? I am sure there were lots of explorers prior to written language. But the following names come to mind, that might fit the bill for your assignment:

Leif Erikson and his father, Eric the Red

Magellan (first to circumnavigate the globe)

and, of course, the old stand by:

Christopher Columbus.

There were literally hundreds if not thousands of guys in boats, trying for all their might to find a shorter route to the Spice Islands and to do it first. How many were lost at sea we will never know, for their names are not found in history books.

Explore the world? WHAT are you asking? Are you sure this is your question? Man has been exploring his surroundings and his environment since he first appeared as some sub-human specie! The were sub-human, ape-like, animals looking for food and a likely mate. They had no speech but probably grunts and noises like apes... sorry, I wasn't around and I don't think they had names, like Moe, Larry and Curly.
