I recommend the gerbil. I have 9 right now and they are so much fun. They are very friendly and rarely bite. They are very easy to take care of and low maintenance. I beleive I spend more time playing with them then I do cleaning their cage. For maintenance, I change out all the litter one a week and every day I check their food and water and give them things to chew on. Other than that, all you do is pay attention to them when you want to. I have this little critter pen that I set up and put together what you can call a gerbil play ground with things to climb in and on and my gerbils have a blast investigating everything. They are very curious, adorable little animals. Make sure you get at least 2 though, they like the company.

I would suggest a hamster or a dwarf rabbit. Hamsters are small and easy to care for, but a bunny is more cuddly. A hamster will climb all over you and try to escape. A bunny will sit on your lap and let you pet him. I don't recommend a gerbil. There nails feel funny on your skin. Just remember to constantly hold your pet from the beginning. If you don't, they'll become antisocial and won't like you.

Rats make wonderful pets. They are cute, sociable, and bond very well to humans. A perfect "starter" pet for a young person.

Definitely it's a pup. Dog is easily adaptable, sociable and faithful animal. It adjusts with the family and becomes a useful member.

A guinea pig. Guinea pigs are fun, personable, and incredibly tame. I had one for a couple of years, he was just wonderful. The only thing about guinea pigs is that they require a lot of TLC time, so don't get one if you're not home a lot. Also, their lungs are sensitive (get pnumonia etc easily) so if you're a smoker, don't get one.

If you don't have toddlers...(they like to pull the tail- the cat doesn't like that at all).....get a cat. A cat likes to snuggle with you....or sleep next to you. A cat doesn't bark....and a cat is clean.
Doesn't need to be walked. Wiil wait patiently for you.
