It's an expensive car to buy, but even the base model 325 will give you a great ride. But you'll face higher than average insurance costs, and BMWs drink unleaded premium gas (91 octane and above). If you're looking for a BMW, and income and costs are an issue, look at something 2-4 years old. Most BMW dealers offer used cars that have been checked out. BMWs also tend to hold their value better than most cars of equal age, so expect to pay a little more for a used one, but lots less than a new one. A previous post also mentioned the costs after the free maintenance period lapses. These can be expensive trips to the dealer.

If you are fortunate enough to buy a new/ secondhand BMW with a BMW Motorplan - No worries!
Stay clear from older BMW`s which will be repaired from your pocket. A 318i might still be "affordable". the bigger ones might cause you to register a second bond on your house for repairs:-)
BMW spent in the vicinity of $30`000 on repairing my last vehicle - Covered by Motorplan - within the first two months after I bought it.
The BMW I owned before that must have cost BMW close to $15`000 on repairs in one year.
My wife's BMW has seen the inside of the workshop on a average of once every two months this past year - so glad for the motorplan.
I got rid of the BMW's as my daily transport. I have an old 6 series that I love to bits in my garage - I do not need to depend upon it. Costs a fortune to maintain.
I got to know all the BMW technicians and sales people from a couple of dealerships on a first name basis.
I replaced the "Driving Pleasure" with Japanese reliability.

I bought my son a 1980 318i with 130,000km on it. The injectors were $70 each lucky it was only a 4 cyl engine. It has developed a hot start problem which could cost $300 to fix and the bearing has a rattle. I am told that a non-genuine set cost $50 but the whole engine has to be removed and disassembled at $60/h and may take two days. While they are nice to drive I think a Nissan Stanza at 1/3 the cost would have been a better idea. The Japs make better engines.

If you you are buying a new car no. If you are looking for a used car then they can be. It depends on the year make and model.
If you want to know more call a shop in your area that does a lot of BMW and ask how much for the type of service a car would need. Oil change, tune up, brakes, water pump. Tell them you are thinking of buying a used BMW and just need a rough estimate so you can decide if the car is in your price range.

I bought a used BMW from a BMW dealership -- it came with an extended warrantee and for a small fee - I have now covered all service, labor, etc right up to January 2009 or 100,000 miles - which ever comes first.
I don't think I could have afforded this car without those two insurances...

it depends my husband just recently paid 500 for his mot, and thats not even n a new BMW, as the car is expensive yes it is expensive to maintain, you cannot help it if the parts go faulty, but what you can do is make sure that you go to a very good garage and make sure they replace the parts that they said they have even watch over tyhem while they fix the car that way it wont cost you too much as the car will last. beware of garage scammers

It's expensive once you're out of warranty. BMW is offering full maintenance on their new line for 4 years or 50,000 miles. (Which ever comes first). And that covers oil changes, brakes, wiper refills, and any other service component.
When you're out, you're screwed. But they are SooOooo fun to drive. Especially a 650 with SMG.

i saw you post in volvo and bmw. both are incredible cars. i have owned both. volvo is cheaper to fix, but bmw gets a little better gas mileage. i would say on an average income, stick with the volvo. upgrade in a few years to a bmw. have fun!

Old or new, dealers will cost you an arm and a leg for maintenance. Maintaining my BMW is very cheap for me since I do it all myself.
