It is said that the world is becoming smaller all the time. In the days of sailing ships news between Europe and the Americas would probably take weeks to be passed along. Steamships changed this to a few days but still a major event would take place without people learning of it for days afterwards. Inventions such as the telegraph, telephone, radio and television made news available within hours and later within minutes. With the internet news is available now virtually as it happens.

Communication used to rely on a message being delivered by physical transport. By runner, by horse, by wagon, by boat, by plane, etc. Each of those takes time.
Today, communication is bounced off of satellites and relayed around the world in micro seconds. In effect, the world shrank because it no longer took time to relay messages from one place to another.
Hope this helps.

I think that it means since you can get to speak with of virtually see a person within a matter of seconds thru a computer or via another electronic device the world now is smaller. You dont have to travel to see things that you can just look up on the web. Or you dont need to send letters thru transportation now because you can sit at your computer, write and email and instantly have it sent.

It means that in order to communicate, people no longer had to travel from place to place. At one point in history, to send a message, people would have to travel. The further the distance, the longer it would take to receive the message. When communication no longer relied on travel, the distance involved became meaningless thus shrinking the world.

A long time ago people would have to walk to someone elses house to speak with them. they didnt have phones or cars. But when telephones were invented people just could call people up whenever they wanted. When you just use IM or something your not really talking to the person IN person. so people could lie very easily. and that shrinks the world by making it a less happy place to live in.

the answer is that the world did not shrink physically, but think of the you at one end of a football field and your friend at the other end. if you wanted too write a letter how long would it take too deliver it? a minute? with things such as telephones, email, instant messenger it take only minutes. so in reality only the time it takes too deliver a message.
