Unless you hit a philosopher ethics will probably never come up. The worst that can happen is you might be arrested for unlawful discharge of an onion within the city limits.

I alway do the smell taste test first, then i'll toss it if it's expired. Onions stay for a long time, so does chocolate, if it was in the fridge. if it was mushy then toss it, but otherwise use your gut.
