Well, they're not a good team to root for this year. The NY Yankees have a magic number of 4, meaning that any combination of Yankee wins or Red Sox losses totalling 4 clinches the AL East for them. Minnesota's magic number for the wild card to win over the Chicago White Sox is 10, and the Red Sox are a few games behind Chicago. Barring a miracle like the Red Sox beating the Yankees in the 2004 playoffs after trailing the series 3-0, cheering for the Red Sox this year will only last for a couple more weeks.

YES.
1. They have a knowledgeable fan base
2. They are part of the biggest rivalry in sports (and have good reasons for their hatred).
3. They're a team that you can quickly like
4. They have the most unique park in the major leagues
5. Boston loves its baseball team more than any other town loves its sports team (besides Green Bay and the Packers...they're ridiculous).
There are many more reasons that you will learn once you start to support them...make the right choice and at least dont become a Yankee fan...look at what the Yankee fans have to say on this site and you'll see why I say that.

It's different to cheer for the Red Sox if you've been a life long fan, or you have a special reason to. It's pretty lame if you just jump on the bandwagon because they won the WS a few years ago. They're an okay team, but find one you really like.

No, Red Sox fans usually become pill poppers and alcoholics. Many of their fans died before they ever saw the team win a World Series. Red Sox fans are only happy once every 86 years. Do you really want to experience that kind of agony?
Make it easy on yourself learn to love the Yankees

yes!!! no the sox aren't doing great now but seriously they have a lot to offer. i mean they are one of the best this year when it comes to defense, what are they first, second in the league with lowest errors. but to be a fan of the sox you have to be ready for the highs and the lows. you tend to become an emotional fan. but it's all good because that's when you know you're a true fan.

They've got good ownership, a storied history, a GM who understands the game, and one of the largest and most loyal fan bases in sports. So yes, they're definitely a good team to root for.
I'm not a Sox fan, but I respect their franchise and fans.
