everything works on a scale of 10. The english system has a mix of scales (16 ounces in a pound, 12 inches in a foot, 64 fluid ounces in a gallon). Everything in the metric is a multiple of 10 (10 centimeters in a meter, or 1,000 grams in a kilogram, which is 10*10*10 grams in a kilogram)

everything is in tens. 1 centimeter is ten millimeters. a kilometer is a thousand meters. milli means .001, centi is .01 deca is .1, deka is 10 , hecta is 100, and kilo is 1,000. fun stuff...
