Ok, I really don't understand college football very well, I used to hate it but now i"m really into it (of course because I'm in college now). Anyway, what I don't understand is the BCS bowls

What happens if, for example, you win the Fiesta Bowl? Is that it, because they've already decided who's going to the championship bowl anyway?

Any help is truly appreciated

The BCS, Bowl Championship Series takes place on and around New Years. Its is made up of the 4 biggest bowl games. The Rose, Fiesta, Orange and Sugar Bowls. On a rotating basis each gets the National Championship game between the teams 1st and 2nd in the poll every 4 years. The other three games choose who they want in their games but a team must be in the top 12 nationally in order to be selected. There was a time when certain conferences were tied in to certain bowls, for example the Big 12 conference champion went to the Orange Bowl and the Southeast conference champion went to the Sugar Bowl. If these particular teams are not in the championship game they may still follow this practice, I'm not sure. As for what happens when you win? Nothing official that I'm aware of other than the winner of the championship game being awarded the National Championship as Texas was last year. The schools and conferences get a ton of money for being in the game, I've never heard that there is a winners and losers share. The biggest gain for the winner is probably in recruitment power, all the top high school players they're trying to convince to go there just got to see them win a big game on national TV in front of a huge crowd.

the top two teams in the BCS play in the national championship game.there are four other BCS bowls.the Rose Bowl the Fiesta Bowl the Sugar bowl and the Orange Bowl. these bowls are what teams set there goals for in the beginning of the season.there are six BCS conferences.SEC, ACC, Big 12, Big 10, Big East, PAC 10.with the addition of the seperate National Championship Game more conferences will get BCS bids.for example MAC CUSA WAC.the bowls pay out and are more important than the other bowls.

Teams are given a BCS ranking based upon a variety of factors including their rankings in the AP Poll, the USAToday Poll and the Coaches Poll. So when you get into one of the BCS bowls based upon your ranking, you will be ranked in the final poll depending upon whether you win or lose. However, only the top two teams are allowed to play for the BCS National Championship.

Since the NCAA refuses to have a tournament for Division 1A schools, only the top two teams have a chance. Is it any wonder that this system is referred to as "bs"?

Unfortunately, there is too much money involved in the current bowl system to bring about much change. A playoff of at least the top 8 teams would be nice, but don't expect it in the near future.

By the way, this is the only NCAA sport where there is not a post- season tournament used to determine a champion. It is only at the Division 1A level where a true playoff does not exist.

Hope this helps.

The school gets a bunch of money and it is seen by millions of people.

Unless the game is 1 vs 2, its usually nothing more than the opportunity to play in a national, prime time game. Basically the BCS is a system that was put in place to try to help select the "proper" teams to play in the championship game (Rose Bowl last year) the rest of the games are the best match-ups that can get the most viewers and generate the most revenue.

There are several BCS bowls. The national championship bowl game changes every year. For example, it could be the Fiesta Bowl one year and the Orange Bowl the next.
Also, the teams that make it to BCS bowl games get a lot more money for their school.

The school football program gets a boatload of money & a big fancy trophy. But the best part is this allows you to be ranked high in the following years polls, which allows you a better chance to end up in another BCS bowl. If you play well, that is.

The BCS is a farce. All other NCAA sports have a play off system as well as lower divisions in football. Division I will never have a true champion in football untill play offs are instituted!

You get the trophy, and your school gets a lot of money for use in the athletic program (I apologize if I am wrong and it's for the entire school's use).

And the winner of the final BCS Bowl Game of the year is the National Champion. There is nothing beyond the Bowl Games.

With the major colleges, when you play a bowl game, BCS or not, that is the end of your season. The BCS commitee will decide who goes to the national championship game. Unlike in 1-AA and lessor colleges they actually have a playoff system to determine their national champion

It used to be as simple as you made more money then the loser. Now with the 5th game it throws a wrinkle in things. You might have a chance to get into that title game.
