For me it is 'The Shining'. Many many years ago I worked in a big hotel in the remote part of Shetland. The hotel was not unlike the hotel in the shining.
Well it was Christmas and the owner decided to close the Hotel for a month as it was not worth opening the hotel up until 6 January when the locals celebrate a Viking fire festival). Anyhow she asked me to caretake the hotel until after the New year.
Being a newcomer to the island I only knew the barman from the little pub down the hill from the hotel and he asked if I would like a video to watch,so I would not feel lonely.
Left alone in this very spooky wooden hotel that creaked at even the slightest whisper and with no one else around I put the video on only to find it was The Shining. I was scared witless by Jack Nicholas and went screaming out of the hotel into a snow blizzard.
Neil Cunliffe if you are watching answers I have never ever forgotten that mean trick... you rotten sod. Ha ha!.

A couple of years back I would have said Exorcist without second thought.
But, few months back I watched Exorcism of Emily Rose, I was watching it on DVD at 2-3 AM in the night and 3 AM has a special relevance in the movie.
Coincidence or not, for next few days, I used to wake up around 3 AM and I am usually brave kinda of a lad, but have to admit it did scare me somewhat.

Severance it's the absolute mutt's nuts
I saw it last week in the UK
i didn't realise it was a horror until it started cause i can't stand them but I would go and see it again in fact I'll get it when it comes out on DVD
it starts out with some really f**ded up sh*t
which only makes sense when it gets to the end
it had me sh*ting myself and jumping out of the seat on several occasions much to my girlfriends amusement
the story line it's self takes a few twists and kept me second guessing it
it's basically a Brit horror/comedy most of the humour in it is very Brit orientated ie subtle/intelligent and very funny so i don't know if I can say this without offending u guys in the States but u may not fully understand it but you so have to see it none the less and judge it for yourselves

Scary movies are my favourite type of movie so it is hard to choose but since I have to pick only one I would say The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake.

I know it's already been mentioned but the Excorsist is one of the scariest movies I have seen at the cinema, aside from that Alien is very intense.
Another movie that a few of you may have watched is Don't look now. Well worth a watch just for the disturbing girl/woman/troll in the red coat.
