Climate is temperate, people are eclectic, rents are high. Lived there for 30 yrs. Loved it. Something going on all the time great neighborhoods to explore and you can eat around the world.

The City is a great place to visit but not to live. It's expensive unless have a few roomates with you. Don't drive your car much because parking is terrible, public transit is pretty good. If you plan on staying about 4 years try going to another area in the Bay Area and visit the city on weekends so you can take your time and see it all at your leisure. The climate is usually foggy even in the summertime. If your lucky you'll get a few 70's in a summer. The people are very diverse. This is the great melting pot. You name it we got it. Whatever your pleasure it's here. If not someone can get it for you. Hope your stay is enjoyable. I've been in the Bay Area for about 20 years and have enjoyed the East bay, North bay as well as the South bay. I guess the city would be a good starting point if you're interested in CA.

First off, I am fascinated that your interpretation of "short stay" is around four years. To me, short stay would be a couple weeks. Having said that, it goes to show that it is all relative as to how things are perceived. Again, you used the word "decent" in asking about SF-your definition of decent and others could be very different. SF is a magnificent city and like most magnificent places, many people want to be there, thus prices are off the richter scale high. I don't know where you'd be coming from, but it would be absolute culture shock as to how expensive and how eclectic SF is. Each neighborhood is another world unto itself. I would highly recommend you go there and check it out and see if living there would be a feasible option for you. Climate is moderate, but unpredictable-never know when the fog will roll in. Oh, and leave your car at home-parking is a nightmare. Walk and use public transport!

It's a very expensive place to live--probably one of the highest costs of living in the US. In order to comfortably pay your rent in San Francisco, you'll need at least a six-figure income.
The climate is temperate. There is often fog off the bay if you live right in the city. It's rarely below 40 degrees, but it's also rarely above the upper 70's. The city has been the site of many earthquakes, including one in the early 1900's that leveled it.
The people are varied. The society is very open and accepting of differences. There is a huge variety of food, and many ethnic choices. There's a good public transit system.

I visited SF in July, I'm English so not sure if my taste will be yours. I enjoyed it very much, only stayed 4 days and to be honest it was enough for me, same old same old when it comes to any big city. What was particularly fabulous was cycling over the Golden Gate Bridge, albeit extremely foggy with poor visibility. We went to a few different places in California over a couple of weeks and my favourite place was Napa Valley.

I'm sure there'll be better responses than this one but I for one would move to San Fran., tomorrow if they'd have me. Beautiful city, even has culture, go for it! There's even a Scottish theme pub called the Edinburgh Arms or something, sells Boddingtons! Of course, if you're not British, you won't know what the hell a pint of Boddy's is!

haha, there are not any. in case you go with something somewhat much less extreme priced you're able to stay purely outdoors, like San Mateo or something. And a million/2 Moon Bay isn't a techniques, suitable onthe ocean and that is mind-blowing, you're able to desire to discover something there. I'mjealous!

You don't give enough info.
What is your budget?
What kind of work do you want to do?
Do you have any religious or political beliefs that may or may not mesh well with the local culture?
