Stick with a Japanese car. If your MX5 is good it should have retained a fair bit of its value. They are sought-after vehicles. Toyota are good, and a good range to choose from. It depends what style of vehicle you are looking for. Whatever you do, stay Jap, anything else is less.

I have a bad back and am looking for a car at the moment. I have other things i need to look for in a car too. But i found the Nissan Note had a comfortable seat. The Honda Jazz was good for the lower back but not so good for the upper back.

If you're in North America, see northernbornsoutherner's answer for vehicles with higher seats.

If you're in the UK or Ireland, any mini-MPV (Meriva, Idea, Scénic, Modus, Focus C-Max, Zafira, etc.), the Fiat Panda, Honda Jazz, Toyota Yaris, Ford Fusion, Mazda2, Daihatsu YRV or Mitsubishi Colt are worth a look.

If you still want something sporty, your best bet may be the Mitsubishi Colt CZT.

If you're completely bonkers, consider the Peugeot 1007 (not to be confused with the 107 which is a perfectly sane small car).

Try some cars. You should be able to get some money back on the MX-5 and usually the Japanese cars are excellent. The Toyota Yaris offers usually very good value for money.

For comfort you won't beat the French. A Renault, Peugeot of Citroen are best for that by a long shot unless you can reach the heights of Rolls royce or Bentley. Citroen are the only French company with reliable mechanics, their suspention sometimes gave problems but was much easier to repair than people realised. And the ride is so much better than the Germans or most other cars.

Higher seats:
Pontiac Vibe, Saturn Vue, Toyota Scion, Subaru Outback or Highlander, Nissan Murano, or a host of pickups.
All easier to get in & out of than doing those deep knee bends. I can relate -- good luck!
