I work in a library, I always hand the patrons there items in there hands. Yet few return the favor, there will always lay there card on the desk for you to pick. You can even have your hand out, so they can hand it to you. But they still dont. And when they come to return items. they just drop them in the book slot, when you right there, why is that so hard?

I always hand peopel there things back, has that every happen to you. In your profession?

I think that it is rude not to give someone something in their hand, especially if they are standing there with their hand out. I used to experience that and what I did was start handing people things the same way they did me. I worked in a grocery store and when they would place the money down instead of handing it to me I would lay their change and receipt on the counter the same way they handed their money to me. I got dirty looks and I would say thank you and have nice day and move on to the next customer.

There's a chapter that I teach on culture and diversity in one of the psych texts. This chapter gives some examples of "strange" cultural behaviors and mentions what you describe above. Apparently, a lot of people from the middle east think that it is rude (towards you) to touch your hand during a transaction, so you may find them putting the change on the counter for you to pick up, or laying their library cards/or books down for you, etc.

Yes , I notice this .If more people were like you , this would be just little better of a place to live . People are in too much of a rush (only to get stuck in traffic) to be considerate enough to just put it in your hand .Just realize , that some people will be civilized and do this , and when some one pays you that respect, let that positivity stay with you .That eases the negative , accentuates the positive .

Yes, always. The respect level in our society has been declining for quite some time. You just gave a perfect example. There are many more. The best thing we can do is to teach our children respect and have them teach it to their kids and so on. Hopefully if we can all do this then we could pull ourselves out of this cesspool of disrespect.

That's a big big pet peeve of mine , I hate it! I always offer my hand out when taking money and they still throw it on the counter at me well you know what? If I get a person like that, I throw it right back when they have they're hand out for the change. It's funny! They won't put it in your hand but expect back in theirs. NO WAY!

I hate when people do that. I think that is one of the rudest things ever. If I go in a store and I hold my hand out for my change and they still put it on the counter I will leave my hand out until they put it in my hand. I always put things in people's hand

Working in a shop this is one of my pet hates. I hold my hand out and they but the money on the counter why oh why. It is so rude they wouldn't like it if we did it so don't do it to us.

I believe physical interaction with strangers is becoming a taboo.

If I do something like that, it is because the person is busy.
