It's graphite,

One of the first writing intruments was the stylus, it was made of lead which was used because it left a mark on the papyrus and other material used for writing.

When pencils were introduced graphite was used for the core. Even though it's not made of lead, people referred to the core as lead so the name has stuck.

It's a mix of graphite and clay. The different grades come from what the ratio of graphite to clay is, which in turn determines how hard the "lead" is and how dark a mark it makes.

Graphite for the black. It used to be (and may still be) mixed with clay as a binder to hold the "lead" together. The graphite to clay ratio and the type of clay used could be varied to produce the different hardnesses. Something synthetic may have replaced the clay.

Different grades of pencils are based on different hardness of the material. A #2 pencil, or HB pencil is the middle, then they go off on scales on either side getting harder (H) or softer (B). Usually you can find B5's all the way to H5's.

graphite. The grading system refers to the softness of the "lead". The higher the number the harder it is.
