In all there were 14 escape attempts made by a total of 36 men(2 tried twice).Of all of these men, only 5 are listed "missing and presumed dead". Of these, only 3 are thought to have any possible chance of survival according to skeptics.Frank Morris and Clarence and John Anglin escaped from Alcatraz on June 11, 1962. They escaped through a utility corridor behind their cellblock,up to the prison roof, and down a pipe to the shore. There they used life vests and a life raft fabricated from prison-issued raincoats to presumably make it to Angel Island. They had also fabricated life-like mannequin heads so as not to alert guards of their disappearance and provide precious time needed to make the escape. Although their bodies were never found, they are officially assumed drowned and none of the them were ever seen again.

NONE !
During its 29 years of operation, the penitentiary never logged any officially successful escapes. Thirty-four prisoners were involved in fourteen attempts, two men trying twice; seven were shot and killed, two drowned, five unaccounted for, the rest recaptured. Two prisoners made it off the island but were returned, one in 1945 and one in 1962.
