You can connect the two computers using a crossover cable, such as this one.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16812117815
You can find them at your local computer store as well.
Or you can connect the two computers via a network hub and use regular ethernet cables.
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7169262&st=hub&type=product&id=1110266457493
In addition to using a crossover cable or a network hub, you'll also have to make sure your computer has two network cards installed. You can check by looking in the back of your computer. They're also referred to as ethernet cards.
After you get the two computers hooked up, you can read this website for more information on how to share the internet connection with Windows.
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/
THE EASIER WAY
The easiest way to share your Internet connection is with a router. With a router, all you need are a couple of ethernet/network/rj45 cables and the router itself. Routers can often be had for nothing (free after rebates), but even without rebates you can find one for $20.
If you use a dial-up internet connection, then you're out of luck because a router won't help you and you'll have to use the above method.
Routers:

If you can, go with a router.. it'll save you alot of headache.

you could try setting up a home network but youll need network cards for that, if you just want to transfer files you could use a printer cable and set up a serial connection, or if you have broadband some isps let you connect both computers at once, ive never tried that though so i dont know how it works

You would need what they provider calls a Modem Router that you can connect several computers to the Internet via cable or wireless (you need compatible cards and wireless hardware)
You can also upgrade your computers to wireless technology that way you can move your computers around the house without wires.
Hope that proved useful

If both have a network card use an RJ45 crossover cable, my two pc's share an internet connection no problem. If you run XP on both pc's it is easy to set up the network, you can even set them up if one is running XP and the other ME or 98.
