They aren't too good with anything but these idealised body types, like we're all perpetual teenagers and conventionally good looking. I don't think it's being petty -- the Hollywood images (manipulated and air-brushed -- even the stars don't actually look like that) train our brains to see these impossible body types as the standards of 'attractiveness.' That actually started in the 50s with the ideal of the happy homemaker (see Betty Freidan's _The Feminine Mystique_, 1963) as a way of getting women back out of the work force and using up excess post-war production capacity. Post-70s, it became the Beauty Myth and women's economic power gets channeled into clothes and cosmetics. Now they're running the same headtrip on men.
So, yeah, it's not petty at all. The image-peddlars are doing their best -- and they are very very good at it -- to make us feel lousy about ourselves so that we buy their products, whether it's Hagen Das or Maybelline.
Then consider the consequences this has on our relationships. Mabye that's why the divorce rate is so high. On our self-confidence, do we stand up for our employment rights or do we take what we can get in order to pay off our credit cards and moan about poor conditions while we order take-out because we're too tired to cook? And so on.
Obviously. obese avatars aren't the solutions to all of society's problems. But it is part of this whole mythos which perpetuates some of them. Recognizing the pieces is the first step towards changing the big picture.
Besides all that, I wouldn't use an avatar because I don't want to look like I'm not long out of puberty. :-)

I posted the same question a few days ago. I don't know about the men avatars but the women have plus sizes, but they are still rather frail and they give some ugly clothing choices. But I think they do need bigger avatars. All these look sick like they have anorexia or something.
