There are cilia in the lungs- they function to clear dirt and debris out of the air you breathe- that is also one of the reasons that smokers have "black lungs" is because their cilia get paralyzed from smoking and the tar and crap in the smoke build up in the lungs.

Cilia and flagella are projections from the cell and are designed to move the cell itself or to move substances over or around the cell. They do not function in "removing" dirt and debris. Therefore the primary purpose of cilia, is to move fluid, mucous, or cells over their suface. Human body cells with cilia can be found in such areas as the respiratory and female reproductive tracts.

think about it, if they help to remove dirt and debris they must obviously be somewhere where dirt and debris can get in the first place. the only place inside your body where dirt and debris can get, unless you make a real effort, are your natural orifices, and that's exactly where you'll find cilia. they are lining your windpipe making you cough when you choke, and they are in your nose making you sneeze when dirt gets in there.

Cilia work to remove dirt and debris....where would cilia be? The answer is "Cilia is wherever dirt and debris is....or isn't, if it's working right."

Celia are little hairs, like in your nose. They help you when you breathe, to filter little pieces of dust and dirt as you breathe. Also, in your ears, so your ears don't get clogged, the same as with your nose.

The throat. When you clear your throat, you are forcing the cilia to move phlem up and out of the area.
