I just put Bilsteins front shocks on my ford ranger. On the right side the plastic cover that covers the top half of the shock keeps falling down. Would it hurt the shock if I took it off?

yes, to a certain degree. those covers are there to keep stuff like mud, dirt, rocks etc from getting lodged in the actual piston. if there is dirt and mud on the piston asit travels up and down, it can infiltrate the inner shock and either muck it up or cause it to work improperly. those pistons are lubed and greased for ease of travel and if anything was to get stuck to that grease or cause it to degrade prematurely, bad stuff can happen.

No it won't hurt the shock or affect it's performance right away. The cover is to keep debris from getting on the piston rod of the shock and prevent corrosion and pitting of the chromesurface Pitting can eventually wear out the seal on the top of the shock that keeps the oil and or gases in the shock. this won't happen right away but over a few years might.

Not really however it is good to have as it keeps dirt and mud off of engine parts. Why don't you fix the plastic cover or call the parts department at your local Ford dealer and buy a new one for like 20 bucks.

Those covers are not just for looks, They protect the shocks from injury due to dirt, water etc.
Find a way to make it stay up. You will be glad you did later on.

No it just helps keep dirt from the shaft. Shock will be fine if you take it off.
