My wife had a c-section, which I was present for, and I saw them perform the surgery. At one point after the baby was delivered, they pulled her uterus through the incision and placed it on top of her abdomen in order to stitch it up.

I thought the uterus was connected to the vagina by way of the cervix? How it is possible for them to remove it like that? Did they have to cut the cervix loose in order to remove it, and then had to stitch the connection back up when they put it back? I didn't think it was possible that the cervix was just sitting there not connected to the vagina, but now I am wondering after seeing my wife go through the surgery.

If anyone who has good medical knowledge could explain this to me I would appreciate it.

Thanks!

No, it's fine and very possibe for them to do that. I saw on the discovery channel or TLC, one of those education channels once, a surgery on this pregnant women who's baby had spine had not closed..i think it's called spina bifida. Anyway, they actually performed surgery on the baby while still in the womb. They cut open the women, and pulled out the uturus i'm sure in the same way they did to your wife and they cut it open and closed the baby's spine without even having to take the baby out. Then they sewed up the uterus and put it back in and everything turned out fine. Have faith in the doctor's, they know what they're doing. There's probably alot of leeway or pull to be able to pull the uterus out and not cause any damage.

The cervix is just the opening that allows a baby to exit the womb. There's no need for it to be cut away in order for the doctor to close the uterus after a C-section. They only pulled her uterus out so they'd have an easier time of closing it, and to make sure that your wife's ovaries and uterus were not damaged during the procedure.

No, they didn't cut it free from the rest of her body. From what I understand, it is normal for them to lift it out like this during a c/s in order to make sure that all of the placenta is removed. Think how much her uterus stretched and grew during the pregnancy. There must be some degree of elasticity there for it to be able to do that.

this is the only site I can find. But I think this question is to be best asked to the doctor who performed the surgery. I am sure that they will be glad to explain how and why to you.

I had a c-section 7 month ago and I'm very interested to know the answer to your question too!
I'm healthy now so I'm guessing that it doesn't cause damage! :)

this is way to complicated for this forum. see her
doctor if you want details. sufficient for here to say
it was not detached from anything, just pulled out
so the repair could be done more precisely.
