Heathrow 24 7

Heathrow Airport is indeed open 24hrs a day, 365 days a year.

There are about 4 1/2 hours each night when flights are not permitted to arrive / land, and with some flights having a reccomended check-in of 2 hours or more, it wouldn't make sense to close the airport just for a couple of hours.

The airport does work 24/7 including Christmas Day but there are heavy restrictions on overnight flights (pretty much amounts to no flights between 10pm and 6am except for emergencies I think). If you have a flight at 6am, you should still get to the airport for check in at the time suggested by the airline.

Yes, Heathrow is a hard working industrious airport that requires very little down time and no sleep. So it does indeed work 24/7.
Some have described it as a workaholic. Others applaud it's work ethic.
I have found it to be very busy with plenty to do whenever I have been there.

No there is a law banning take-offs in the middle of the night due to residential areas nearby.

Oh sorry I thought you specifically meant takeoffs and landings.

Yes, the airport itself is open 24/7. Get there as early as you like. You should be there at least 2 hours before your departure time.
