Is there some sort of chemical to use...digging them up is really hard and doesn't seem to do much. Ideas?

if your really want rid of them cut them down and use a contact weed killer from a gardening center

Go to your local lawn and garden center and get some Ortho Ground Clear. This is normally used to kill weeds in the cracks of a sidewalk or weed in a gravel drive for up to a year. What you have to do--and it's pretty tedious--is get a small brush and paint it on the leaves. Be careful because any that drips on the lawn can make a dead spot for months. Use it straight out of the bottle--don't dilute it. With some careful attention to the problem you should be able to kill them and be rid of the problem.

You might need to ammend your question with some further detail. To me a red hot poker is a steel rod used to stir up fires that has gotten so incredibly hot that it is now burning red, thus red hot poker.

If you have red hot pokers in your yard, I would let them cool off and then gather them up.
