You should call him what he prefers to be called. It's not your name, it's his. If he has expressed a preference to being called Jim, why do you have an issue with it?

He might also believe that being called Jim sounds older or more mature than Jimmy. My brother in law is Joe. Until he had kids, everyone called him Joey. But marriage and fatherhood change the way people see you - as does your name.

It could depend on his age. My partner in life is named Jim (different scenario I know) and I've always called him Jim, but sometimes Jimmy when I want to be extra nice to him. For a boy though he won.t want his friends laughing at him. One of my Jim's friends called him Jimbo, but he
thought it sounded like an elephant's name!
