Pope Benedict (Joseph Ratzinger) is a highly educated man. He has studied science, history, political science, and all major religions. Scholarship has been his life.
Muslim leaders only learn to memorize the Koran at the madrassah schools.
no pope in history has made a deeper study of Islam. Having explored every verse of the Koran, and engaged in long debates he rejects the simplistic notion — held by fundamentalist Christians, and by the Roman Catholic Church until the middle of the 20th century — that Islam is evil. Yet he is convinced that some of its doctrines are morally indefensible. In Benedict's view, a profound ambiguity about violence lies at the heart of Islam, arising from the Prophet's belief that faith can be spread by the sword. Mohammed, after all, was a general whose troops beheaded hundreds of enemy captives. Benedict would emphasise that the Islamic understanding of God is radically different from that of Christians.

I do not know the extent of Pope Benedict's knowledge about Islam but I have no reason to doubt your research. However, even if I were to guess, I would say that the pontiff probably has a fair knowledge of Islam because he is a head of state not just a priest and Islam is very involved with the security of nations in current politics.
Similarly, I have no knowledge of the extent that Muslim leaders know anything about Christianity or even rap music. However, my guess is that since rap music is popular and Christianity is something they find of little interest, they would probably know more about rap music.

the very fact that Pope desperate to take section in baptizing an prolonged time Italian journalist gives you adequate info that the Pope needed to get credit for the conversion. the guy grew to become right into a techniques from his usa and grew to become into no longer a training Muslim besides. So what grew to become into the large deal interior the extreme profile baptizing? i'm particular the pope that lead 3 important campaign assaults on the holy land between 1087 to 1250 should not be lots distinctive than the present incumbent. I think,Today world is so sensitive as everywhere the word Religion is misused..for their own selfish needs...& deeds..
a world where thousand of men are deing..killing.. a worser world..a sensitive world..where men find the external meaning without even going through the meaning of it..
various thoughts always helped to find the truth in the histry! still should have taken much a care to utter words mainly related to religion..There are many chances of misunderstanding when there are selfish people waiting for the 'fishes'!
when it was from the Pop! they got a big fish!
I agree with the fact that Benedict is a highly educated man. but i do not belive all the muslim prophets are ignorant about other religion and their preechings..
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached,"
I think there are so many of offensive words to hurt a muslim..in this para by Pope The Benedict. But I think there is no a religion which is so a fragile religion which could exist in the power of sword...
and nor a religion whch is so fragile could be easily distroyed with a word...
Every religion is going to exist as they are laid on strong preechings.! thoughts...and never going to perish until men belive on their preechings rather than power of swords!

Benedict, unfortunately, has learned nothing with all his studies. He has steadfastly held onto his view of the world as a neo-Nazi, and has no tolerance for anyone who doesn't view the world through the same narrow prism as himself.
I shudder to think what will happen when St. Peter greets Mr. Ratzinger and sends him straight to hell, no chaser; I am sure he will be totally confused as he is as self-righteous as he is pitiless and un-Christlike.
No one is paying him to go around criticizing Islam. He has no direct knowledge of active muslim practices, as is evidenced by him reaching all the way back to some obscure tome from a minor figure in the Middle Ages to make his obtuse, obfuscating point. This is a petty, fault-finding, officious twit of a man, and he doesn't deserve a place on the lowest level sweep up team, nevermind a role on the world stage.
Let's all hope his time in authority is short, and as uneventful as possible.

Highly possible. I'm sure the pope had to study all kinds of beliefs. Most people who believe one religion, no matter which one it is, don't open up to others so they don't understand or know them.

I would agree that the leader of a major religion would be more educated about other religions than the average person.

Absolutely. He is smarter than 500,000 millions muslims that live today. Besides, these muslims always come back to the Crusades and the atrocities that were committed in the name of Christ 500 years ago. They forget that the Western civilization evolved from that and is supporting high moral standards now, while they behave themselves as they did 500 years ago.
I think terrorists who kill civilians for joy shouldn't be as sensitive as they are to Pope's remarks.

All that knowledge does nothing to quell the commandments that all muslims are required to obey. Some of them are not very nice.
